The Fortune 1000 is a list of U.S. companies in order by annual revenue and is compiled by Fortune Magazine. It is an extension of the Fortune 500, a list first published in 1955.

Significant exclusions from the list include private companies that do not file financial data with a government agency and U.S. companies under foreign ownership or control. Analysts use the annual list to look for trends in geographic concentration and gender leadership. The list can also be used to document volatility in the business community. Between 1993 and 2003, there was a 60 percent turnover in the roster of Fortune 1000 companies.
