Are foxes canines?

Foxes belong to the family Canidae, and as the word "canine" is defined as anything relating to or belonging to the Canidae, foxes are canines. Members of this group may also be called canids.

Canidae includes wolves, dingoes and domestic dogs (all of which are the same species); coyotes and jackals; and the many different types of foxes. All of these are considered canines, although the word is most often applied to the animals in the subgrouping Canis. Canis is the genus that includes wolves and their subtypes as well as coyotes and jackals. Foxes are separated into several different groups within Canidae, but most belong to the genus Vulpes.
