Do foxes eat cats?

Foxes generally do not eat cats, but they have been known to eat kittens or very small cats on occasion. An average adult cat is similar in size to a fox and generally employs self-defense, so foxes usually do not prey on them.
Although foxes often live near cities and towns, they have a natural fear of humans and usually avoid contact with them. Foxes hunt alone and prey on small animals such as birds, rabbits and rodents. They eat some fruits and vegetables as well. Occasionally foxes come into backyards if they smell unsecured garbage or pet food, so it is best to store these items in a safe place and keep small pets indoors.
