A red fox is an omnivore. Approximately 95 percent of its diet consists of meat that is both scavenged and hunted. Worms and insects may constitute the other 4 percent and fruit the remaining 1 percent.
The red fox’s widely varied diet consists of plants, small rodents, woodchucks, deer mice and waterfowl. It may also eat fruits, insects, birds, reptiles, fish and raccoons.
Red foxes are solitary, opportunistic hunters. Their diet may be as flexible as their habitat, and they may take advantage of any available food source they can scavenge in surrounding suburban areas such as garbage or pet food. Any surplus food is buried and cached to be eaten later.
