The gall bladder is located on the upper right section of the abdomen right below and behind the liver. Three inches long and half as wide, the small organ's function is to store and concentrate the bile produced by the liver and then release it into the small intestine's duodenum.
As part of the biliary tract, the gall bladder helps digestion with the movement of bile. It also breaks up fats and drains waste products from the liver. A common condition affecting the gall bladder is gallstones, which are small, hard deposits formed when components of the bile crystallize. While most gallstones are harmless, large ones may block the gall bladder, causing a painful inflammation.
