Gasoline tax is not the same in every state. As of 2015, gasoline tax ranges from 20.08 cents per gallon to 37.73 cents per gallon, according to the American Petroleum Institute. The gasoline tax is composed of federal, state, excise and other taxes.
As of 2015, the nationwide average combined tax on gasoline is 48.88 cents per gallon, with the federal portion of the tax being 18.40 cents per gallon, notes the American Petroleum Institute. The average state gasoline excise tax is 20.77 cents per gallon. Other taxes, such as sales, gross receipts, and county and local taxes account for 9.71 cents per gallon.
