The capital of Mexico is Mexico City, which is the oldest metropolis in North America. Mexico City, located in south central Mexico, has a population of roughly 8.5 million, and its metropolitan area is home to more than 20 million people.
Mexico City sits atop a highland valley at nearly 7,392 feet about sea level. Along the city's southeast side are two volcanoes: Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl. The weather is warm, with an average temperature of 72 degrees Fahrenheit. There are a variety of cultural events and museums in the city, including the National Museum of Anthropology and the National History Museum.
