In which country is Copenhagen located?

Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark. More than 1.1 million people call Copenhagen home, and this city contains approximately one-third of the country's population. The city sits on the shores of the Oresund, in the southeastern corner of the country.

Archaeological evidence indicates that people have lived in the region that would become Copenhagen as long as 6,000 years ago, but the first written records come from 1043 AD. For centuries, the village known as "Havn," Danish for "harbor," was a small fishing village, but it slowly grew through trade into an important town. It has been Denmark's capital since 1343.
