What is the e-Aadhaar card?

The e-Aadhaar card is an identification card issued on behalf of the Government of India. The card enables the identification of every Indian resident regardless of age, gender or previous documentation.
The e-Aadhaar card contains a 12-digit identification number for each member of a household. One card is sufficient to represent an entire family. The government and other organizations use the card and number to track demographic and biometric information.
It is free to enroll and valid for life. The service if voluntary and can be used by any identity-based application. Families and individuals use the card to access governmental and non-governmental services such as banking and passport applications.
