What does the gold chocobo do in the Final Fantasy game?

The gold chocobo allows the player to travel anywhere on the world map in the Final Fantasy game. It is completely unrestricted by terrain and can cross rivers, oceans and even mountains.

Gold chocobos are an extremely rare breed of chocobo that can only be obtained by either breeding two very specific chocobo types together or by defeating an immensely powerful super boss and bringing the item it drops to the NPC Kalm Traveler. Because they have that ancestry of all other chocobo types, including yellow, blue, green and red, they can travel across all of the terrains that their predecessors could.
