Is the golden bamboo lemur endangered?

As of 2014, the golden bamboo lemur is critically endangered due to loss of habitat, poaching and possible pet trade. The total golden bamboo lemur population estimated to be approximately 1,000 individuals in 2014. Conservation efforts for this species began in 1991 with the opening of Ranomafana National Park.

The golden bamboo lemur lives in the rain forests of southeastern Madagascar. About the size of a cat, it is named for the golden fur surrounding its face. It is crepuscular and is most active during twilight hours when it feeds on bamboo grass. The golden bamboo lemur consumes as much as 18 ounces of bamboo per day.
