Carl Paul and his wife, Barbara, founded Golfsmith in 1967. He launched the company after perceiving that there was an unmet demand for custom-made golf equipment in the industry.
Carl Paul founded the company in Edison, New Jersey. Its headquarters moved in the 1970s to Austin, Texas, after his brother Frank joined the business. The company focused on catalogue sales until 1992, when it moved to its 40-acre headquarters. The campus included corporate offices, a practice range, a Golfsmith store, and shipping and distribution facilities. In 2012, Golfsmith merged with Golf Town, forming Golfsmith International, which became the world's largest golf-specific retailer.
