Good mouthwashes used for treatment of gum infections are antiseptic preparations that contain active salts including fluoride, chlorhexidine, thymol, gluconate, triclosan and cetylpyridinium chloride. However, treatment using these preparations varies on the cause of infection.
Mouthwashes are swirled and gargled in the mouth to come into contact with the tooth and gum surfaces. Different types of mouthwashes are used to reduce gum inflammation in the case of the gum disease called gingivitis. They can also be used to prevent tooth sensitivity to cold, heat and pain and can also be used for breath freshening. In addition, using mouthwash plays a role in preventing tooth decay.
