WebMD reports that obstructive sleep apnea is commonly and effectively treated with a continuous positive airway pressure machine. Alternative treatments that may help some patients include mandibular advancement devices, weight loss and surgery.
WebMD explains that people with obstructive sleep apnea frequently stop breathing for short periods of time while sleeping. CPAP machines treat sleep apnea by directing a continuous stream of air to the patient during sleep, which keeps the airway open. Mandibular advancement devices keep the jaw forward during sleep, which keeps the airway open. Surgery to remove excess tissue from the back of the throat can be effective in some people.
