What is an NYC birth certificate?

An NYC birth certificate is a birth certificate that is issued by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. The department typically mails the birth certificates for newborns within the first two months of their birth free of charge.
A New York resident can get a birth certificate for himself if he is at least 18 years old. They can also be obtained for children and deceased relatives. In the case of deceased relatives, the request must be submitted via mail or in person; other requests can be submitted online through the NYC.gov website. As of 2014, military personnel and government agencies can verify births electronically.
