The Grand Canyon is located in the northwestern section of Arizona. Most of its area is contained within the Grand Canyon National Park, which is under the jurisdiction of the United States' National Park Service.

Arizona earned its official slogan and nickname as the "Grand Canyon State" in celebration of its world-renowned natural wonder. The Grand Canyon stretches for 277 miles and averages a distance of 10 miles in width. The gorge runs approximately 1 mile deep, and it divides the park into the South and North Rims.

The South Rim is an hour and a half drive from Interstate 40 and near Flagstaff and Williams, which are important transportation hubs. The state's capital city of Phoenix is also within the southern edge of the Grand Canyon National Park. The North Rim is close to the borders of Utah, and its remoteness provides less access to visitors.
