Why is Greenland called Greenland?

An exiled Viking known as Erik the Red is credited with giving Greenland its name. When his exile ended, he wanted to settle the island, but needed others to join him. Erik the Red called the island Greenland to make it sound attractive and enticing to others.

Greenland is the largest island in the world, with most of it being covered by an ice sheet. It's an autonomous country within the kingdom of Denmark. Greenland was ceded to Denmark in 1814, and has gradually gained more autonomy since then. As of 2014, the population in Denmark is 56,968, making it the least densely populated country in the world.
