How do you grow a weeping cherry tree?

To grow a weeping cherry tree, choose a location, dig a hole, insert the tree, add mulch, and water the tree. This process takes several weeks and requires a shovel, a yardstick, a hose, mulch and a juvenile weeping cherry tree. It is also helpful to have an assistant.

1. Choose a viable location

   Choose a location that gets at least six hours of sunlight daily and has excellent soil drainage. Weeping cherry trees need 4 to 6 feet of space on all sides.

2. Dig a hole

   Measure the tree's root ball with a yardstick. Dig a hole that is as deep as the root ball and three times wider. Do not put fertilizer or compost in or around the hole.

3. Insert the root ball

   Set the root ball in the hole, and cover it with soil. If you have an assistant, have them stabilize the tree while you bury the root ball. Verify that the trunk is straight before you continue.

4. Add mulch

   Place a 3- to 4-inch layer of mulch beneath the tree, but do not deposit it within 6 inches of the trunk.

5. Water the tree

   Water the tree until the soil is saturated and muddy. Water it frequently for several weeks.
