Is Guatemala safe?

Guatemala is not considered a safe country, according to the U.S. Department of State. The country has a high rate of violent crime and averaged 101 murders per week in 2013. Foreign visitors to the country also reported armed robbery, theft, rape, kidnapping, assault and carjacking.
From 2009 to 2013, missing person cases in Guatemala increased by 207 percent and sexual assaults increased by 70 percent, according to the U.S. Department of State. Road safety is rated fair by the Department of State, while safety on public transportation is rated as poor. Visitors should not drive in rural areas after dark. Visitors to Guatemala are also at risk of experiencing earthquakes or volcanic eruptions.
