A hallux valgus metatarsal osteotomy operation is a procedure to fix a bunion, according to Podiatry Today. One of the most popular operations to repair a bunion is the scarf technique.

During the scarf technique, the surgeon makes a Z-shaped cut in the first metatarsal bone of the big toe to separate the head of the bone and the shaft, claims Podiatry Today. The surgeon then rotates the bone and secures it with screws. He then removes any excess bone on the side of the foot.

The surgeon then releases any tendons and other soft tissue around the big toe that may have become too tight while the bunion was in place, says Podiatry Today. He may also remove a bit of bone from the big toe in a procedure called an akin osteotomy.
