A hallux valgus is a bunion, according to the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. A bunion is a progressive disorder in which the alignment of the bones changes over time as the big toe leans more and more toward the second toe.

An inherited faulty mechanical foot structure is the most common cause of bunions, states the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. Wearing shoes that crowd the toes can worsen the deformity and cause the bunion to appear earlier. Women are more likely to wear pointy shoes and high heels that cause crowding of the toes, which is possibly why women are more likely to develop bunions than men.
