Pit bulls are typically a healthy breed, but they can have genetic predispositions to kidney, heart and hip diseases. The American Staffordshire Terrier, one of several pit bull breeds, can be prone to cancer and certain allergies. Bloat is another malady that affects the American Staffordshire Terrier.

Bloat is an unpredictable condition in which the stomach of the dog twists and cuts off blood flow. It is often fatal and can leave a dog dead within hours if emergency surgery is not performed. Symptoms of bloat include restlessness, drooling and pale gums. Dry heaving and general distress are also signs. Bloat can recur in the future even in cases of successful surgery. A veterinary procedure known as stomach tacking can prevent future recurrences.
