High school football playoff games are typically held in November and December. The specific month is determined by state in which the games are played and the team's division.
Depending on the state, high school football teams are categorized by divisions such as 1A D1, 1A D2, Class A and Class B. Teams play through regional, sectional and semi-final match ups until reaching a championship game for each class. Iowa, Montana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas and Wyoming are some states that have separate tournaments for six- and eight-player teams. The six- and eight-player teams are fielded by small schools, and some play on 80-yard-long fields.
