The highest point in Mexico is the dormant volcano Pico de Orizaba, with an elevation of 18,620 feet. It is also known as "Citlaltepetl."
Pico de Orizaba is the tallest volcano in the North American continent. It forms part of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt that traverses the east-west region of Mexico. Based from a photograph taken by the International Space Station, the stratovolcano's crater, which is 1,000 feet deep, is covered in snow and ice. Although Pico de Orizaba has not erupted since 1846, geologists conduct ongoing studies to keep track of internal volcanic activity and prepare for possible future eruptions.
