HIPPA is an acronym for Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996. HIPPA is a United States law that protects the medical records of patients. The law also protects how information is provided by health insurance companies, doctors, hospitals and other medical institutions.
The Department of Health and Human Services is the government agency responsible for developing the HIPPA law. The HIPPA law allows a patient to bring his current health insurance plan with him to a new job, avoiding a lapse in coverage. The law also prohibits insurance companies from denying individuals coverage due to pre-existing conditions when changing plans.
