Why do we celebrate Guy Fawkes Night?

Guy Fawkes Night is celebrated on November 5 as a reminder of the treachery of a group of 13 rebels wishing to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605. Guy Fawkes was in charge of guarding the gunpowder placed underneath Parliament and was apprehended when the plan was foiled.

After Fawkes and the others were captured, the people of London lit bonfires to celebrate the failure of the plot as well as the King's safety. Parliament ended up passing a notion to appoint the day as an official holiday, which was in effect until 1859. Even today, the Yeomen of the Guard still search the cellars of the Houses of Parliament before the state opening to check for any danger.
