Where are Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars manufactured?

Modern Hot Wheels toys are made in Malaysia, while current Matchbox cars are die-cast in China. Hot Wheels started manufacturing its toys in Malaysia when it moved its production plant there in 1983. Matchbox die casting was outsourced to mainland China in 1984.

Though Hot Wheels and Matchbox are two different brands of toys made in two different countries, they are actually made by the same toy company, Mattel. Hot Wheels is a Mattel original, while Matchbox was acquired by the toy company via a buyout in 1997. The buyout worried many of each brand's loyalists, but Mattel has been able to successfully manage both brands, thus leading to the continued success of each as of 2016.
