Matchbox cars have a scale of 1:64, meaning that they are 1/64th of the size of a real car. This scale is the most common among die-cast toy cars.

Although the size of a real car is 64 times the size of a die-cast car, a car has 26,2144 times the volume of a die-cast car. The length of the car is considered on a linear scale, but the volume is measured in three dimensions. This volume is equal to 64 cubed, which causes the exponential increase. Mattel, the company that owns the Matchbox brand, also makes models of cars, boats, soldiers, aircraft and ships at scales ranging from 1:12 to 1:700.
