John Adams was born in the Massachusetts Bay Colony and served as the second U.S. President from 1797 to 1801. He served in Holland and France as a diplomat during the Revolutionary War and helped negotiate the treaty of peace.
John Adams was a Harvard-educated lawyer and a delegate to the First and Second Continental Congresses. After his presidency, he retired to his farm in Quincy, Mass., with his wife Abigail Smith Adams. He spent his retirement writing books, columns and letters. John Adams lived long enough to see his son John Quincy Adams become the sixth U.S. President in 1825, though Abigail died in 1818.
