What is honed travertine?

Honed travertine has cracks and holes filled with an impregnable material and sanded to create a smooth, matte surface. It's commonly used in residential applications such as kitchens and baths and can also be used outdoors around pool areas.
Travertine is available in several finishes including honed, tumbled and polished. The polished finish is obtained by sanding to a gloss or semi-gloss shine. Tumbled travertine retains the textured surface of the original stone.
Travertine is a type of limestone created when minerals dissolve in groundwater. When the groundwater dries up, the minerals are deposited on the earth's surface and are compressed to form limestone rock.
