Is Hong Kong in China?

Hong Kong is a part of the nation of China, but it is not geographically located within China’s borders. Comprised of over 200 islands, Hong Kong borders the south coast of China and the South China Sea.

Hong Kong was part of various Chinese dynasties for thousands of years until it became a British colony in 1842. In 1997, Hong Kong was officially returned to Chinese control and named Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Through an agreement with the Chinese government, Hong Kong is autonomous in most areas of governance until 2047. It has a free market economy, is a leader in international finance and trade and is popular with tourists.
