Do hydrangeas need sun or shade?
By Forinfos - 03/10/2025 - 0 comments
The vast majority of hydrangea cultivars need to be in full sun or partial shade to thrive. Hydrangeas prefer moist soil, but soil that is too wet may cause root-rot.
Hydrangeas require protection from the hottest afternoon sun and from wind damage. The stems can break from hard wind. Hydrangea require weekly watering for the best growth. Fertilizing should be done according to type of hydrangea purchased, as the pH of the soil determines bloom color in the red and blue varieties. Hydrangeas should only be pruned if the growth exceeds the boundary of the garden area or the preferred planting area.
