Should a hydrangea be planted in sun or shade?

Light requirements can vary depending on the variety being planted, but most hydrangeas grow best when planted in partial shade. Optimal light conditions for hydrangeas are several hours of full sunlight in the morning and full or partial shade in the afternoon.
Hydrangeas can also be planted in full sunlight if afternoon shade is not available, but in that case, more frequent watering is required to prevent the plant from burning or withering. Additionally, hydrangeas do better when planted in a north- or east-facing site, as the winter temperatures in these areas are likely to remain more constant and therefore prevent flower buds from opening prematurely in the spring when temperatures begin to rise.
