What information does a John Deere VIN give?

A John Deere VIN provides information on the engine manufacturer, model number and unique serial number. Most VINs will have either 13 or 17 letters or numbers. VIN interpretations vary between these two types.

VINS with 17 characters also include information on the security code, manufacturing year, transmission code, and wheel or track designation. VINs with 13 characters do not contain this information. VINs with 13 characters have an emissions level designation letter at position seven that is not present on 17-character VINS.
