When installing a grab bar, at what height should it be placed?

When installing a grab bar for a shower or toilet, International Code requires placing the top of the bar between 33 and 36 inches from the floor. With new construction, the framing crew should install blocking between the studs at the correct height for the grab bar.

If installing the grab bar in a shower with a built-in shower seat, the bar should not extend over the seat. If installing the bar next to a toilet, the front edge should reach a minimum of 54 inches away from the rear wall, and the back edge should reach a maximum of 12 inches away from the rear wall.
