Crest toothpaste was invented by a research group, created by Procter & Gamble and lead by Dr. Joseph Muhler, at Indiana University. The group was responsible for developing and testing toothpaste with fluoride. The program began in the 1940s, and Crest arrived on the national market in 1956.

During its research and development stages, clinical studies proved that fluoride toothpaste minimized cavities by 49 percent in individuals aged 6 to 16. In 1960, Crest toothpaste was accepted by the American Dental Association following confirmation that the product was sufficient in minimizing the risk of tooth decay. Crest Pro-Health toothpaste holds the ADA's Seal of Acceptance due to its protective power against multiple dental conditions.
