There are over 7,000 islands in the Caribbean, also known as the West Indies. There are 13 independent island countries: Cuba, the Bahamas, Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, St. Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, Barbados, and Trinidad and Tobago.
Many of the islands in the Caribbean are dependencies or overseas territories of other nations such as the United Kingdom or the United States and therefore cannot claim independent status. The Caribbean area includes the entire Caribbean Sea, as well as the area southeast of the Gulf of Mexico, east of Central America and Mexico and north of South America.
