Jackrabbits make their home primarily in the Great Basin region of the northern Great Plains. According to the Idaho Museum of Natural History, these animals can be found from the Mississippi River to the Sierra Nevada mountains, ranging as far as central Canada to northern New Mexico.
Jackrabbits favor a shrubland or grassland habitat, although they are often found in pine forests and alpine tundra. These animals require environments offering open spaces that allow them to find sufficient food. In the summer, jackrabbits feed on grasses, grains and cultivated crops. They are able to survive the winter season by grazing on tree bark, plant buds and small twigs.
