Jicama, also known as yam bean, or Mexican turnip, has a sweet, fruity taste similar to apples. It is a starchy root that is grown in parts of Central and South America. Its common name is Mexican water chestnut, and like those found in Asia, it can be eaten raw.
Jicama has a creamy white texture and is usually served with the addition of salt, lime, lemon juice and chili powder. Its crisp hint of sweetness makes it a popular addition to salads in Mexico where it can also be found in soups and stir-fried dishes. Jicama is low in calories and high in fiber and vitamin C.
