Considered mildly contagious, jock itch can be transferred from person to person through direct skin-to-skin contact or direct contact with contaminated items, according to WebMD. Mayo Clinic lists examples of contaminated items as towels and clothing that have been used by an infected person.

Caused by the same fungus that causes athlete's foot, jock itch thrives in warm, damp areas, such as the groin. Some people are more prone to jock itch than others. According to Mayo Clinic, men who wear tight underwear, are overweight or are susceptible to other skin conditions have a greater chance of developing jock itch than others.
