The currency of Honduras is the lempira, according to GoCurrency.com. It was named after the 16th-century leader of the Lenca people, who are indigenous to Honduras and El Salvador. Lempira's image appears on the one lempira banknote and the 50 centavo piece.
The Honduran lempira was introduced in 1931 to replace the Honduran peso, and it is distributed in one, two, five, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 500 lempira bills. Coins circulate in 10, 20 and 50 centavos, where 100 centavos are equal to one lempira. Production of the one centavo coin ceased in 1937. The international currency code for the lempira is HNL.
