Giant pandas are found in coniferous and broadleaf forests, according to the Smithsonian National Zoological Park. These forests have torrential rain or heavy mist throughout the year.
Giant pandas are found in habitats of high elevation, 5,000 to 10,000 feet above sea level. These mountain-range forests contain bamboo, which is about 99 percent of a panda's diet. Giant pandas were once found in the lowland areas of central China as well, but due to farming and human development, they are now found only in the higher elevations. The giant panda's thick coat provides warmth in its chilly and damp habitat.
