A kitten needs to eat three times daily, at consistent times, using the feeding guidelines on the food label as a starting point. If a kitten gains or loses too much weight, the owner needs to adjust the portion sizes.

Canned, wet food should not be left out for more than 30 minutes. Dry food stays fresh longer, but leaving it out at all times may cause the kitten to overeat. To encourage exercise, owners should feed their kittens in a different place each time, letting the kitten hunt to find the food.
