The Korean War was fought from June 25, 1950 to July 27, 1953. After the end of World War II, Korea was liberated from Japanese rule and occupied by American and Soviet forces, who were divided from each other by the 38th parallel.
The war began when the communist North Koreans crossed the 38th parallel. The United Nations Security Council condemned the North Korean invasion. U.N. forces under American Gen. Douglas MacArthur made a successful amphibious landing at Inchon, attacking the North Korean forces from behind and driving them north. MacArthur pushed into the north, but Chinese communist forces counterattacked. The war ended in a stalemate in 1953. Korea remains divided as of 2014.
