The New Testament of the Christian Bible is thought to have been written in a commonly spoken form of Greek known as Koine. This language was widely spoken throughout the Mediterranean during the time period in which the books were written, roughly 50 A.D. to 150 A.D.
Koine was a widespread language of writing and scholarship in the Eastern Mediterranean for centuries, largely due to the conquest of the area by the Macedonian Greeks under Alexander the Great. Although the Jewish population in the area in which the New Testament was written spoke Aramaic, most biblical scholars agree that the original language of the anthology that comprises the New Testament was Koine Greek.
