The largest lake in Europe is Lake Ladoga. It is 6,700 square miles in area, excluding its 660 islands, and is 136 miles long. Its basin measures at 100,000 square miles.

Lake Ladoga is found in northwestern Russia, approximately 25 miles east of St. Petersburg. The climate in the lakes region is moderately cold. Its average annual precipitation is 24 inches; the water level is highest in June and July and at its lowest in December and January.

The lake is a part of the White Sea-Baltic Waterway system. This allows freight to be carried through Russia to Finland and to Germany.
