Great Bear Lake is 320 kilometers (199 miles) long, 175 kilometers (109 miles) wide and up to 413 meters (1,355 feet) deep. The lake is covered with ice 8 months each year. It is located in remote northwestern Canada. The northern and western portions of the lake extend into the tundra. The eastern edge is situated over the rocky Canadian Shield. The southern side of the lake is bordered with coniferous forests. The lake was named in 1902.
