Lake Vostok is the largest lake in Antarctica. Its surface is approximately 13,100 feet below the surface of the ice, and it measures 160 by 30 miles at its widest points.
Lake Vostok is located at the southern Pole of Cold, beneath Russia's Vostok Station (for which it was named), under the surface of the central East Antarctic Ice Sheet. This freshwater lake covers 4,830 square miles at an average depth of 1,417 feet, with an estimated volume of 1,300 cubic miles. A ridge divides the lake into two basins. The existence of Lake Vostok, the largest of Antarctica's almost 400 known subglacial lakes, was confirmed in 1993.
