Does latex paint need to be taken to a hazardous waste facility for disposal?

Latex paint can be discarded in the garbage if the paint has completely dried or has been treated with a hardener. Oil-based paint must be disposed of through a hazardous waste facility.
Latex paint contains less hazardous ingredients than oil-based paints, though it may constitute an environmental hazard if discarded while it is still liquid. Absorbent materials such as cat litter or sawdust may be added to latex paint to hasten the drying process, or the paint can be left to air dry away from children or pets. Liquid paint can also be taken to commercial paint recyclers in some cities or counties.
