The laws for crossing the U.S.-Canadian border changed on June 1, 2009, according to USA Today. Since that date, U.S. citizens must provide a passport or other approved travel documentation in order to clear customs.

USA Today states that American and Canadian citizens need documented proof of identity and citizenship. The Findlaw website states that all U.S. citizens, including children, traveling by air need to present a passport, U.S. Military ID with travel orders, U.S. Merchant Mariner Document, or a NEXUS card in order to clear customs. Tripadvisor and USA Today state other acceptable forms of documentation, such as an enhanced driver's license or passport card.
